Hedge Cutting & Tree Services Wicklow — Tidy, Safe, Done Properly.
Our Tree & Hedge Cutting Services in Wicklow
Hedge Trimming & Shaping Annual trims, overgrown reductions, and formal shaping for all hedge types across County Wicklow. Clean, precise cuts with straight lines — not a ragged finish that takes a season to recover from. All cuttings cleared from paths, lawns, and driveways on completion.
Overgrown Hedge Reduction Hedges that have been left for multiple seasons and grown well beyond their intended size. Brought back to a manageable height and width in stages where the health of the hedge requires it, and finished cleanly so the result looks intentional.
Boundary Hedge Maintenance Branches overhanging public roads, footpaths, and neighbouring properties are the legal responsibility of the landowner. John cuts boundary hedges cleanly and ensures all overhang is fully cleared — keeping you on the right side of your obligations to Wicklow County Council.
Tree Pruning & Crown Work Crown lifting to clear rooflines, gutters, and paths. Crown thinning to reduce wind loading and improve light. Deadwood removal before branches fail — particularly important on Wicklow properties exposed to autumn and winter storms.
Tree Removal Full removals carried out safely with the right equipment. Sections lowered in a controlled manner where garden access is restricted. Stump grinding available where a clean, level finish is needed for replanting or landscaping.

Frequently Asked Questions — Hedge Cutting & Tree Services
The legal hedge cutting season in Ireland runs from 1st September to the end of February, and this is when the vast majority of hedge cutting work is carried out. September to November is ideal for most species — growth has stopped for the season, the cut is clean and clear going into winter, and the hedge is ready for the spring flush. Late winter cutting in January and February is also good for most broadleaf species before new growth begins.
The Wildlife Acts 1976-2012 prohibit cutting, grubbing, or burning vegetation on uncultivated land and roadsides between 1st March and 31st August to protect nesting birds. Garden hedges on cultivated land are generally exempt from this restriction, but John works within the spirit of the legislation and avoids cutting during the active bird nesting season where hedges are known to contain nests. For roadside boundary hedges and rural hedgerows, the 1st March to 31st August restriction applies.
Yes. Overgrown hedges are reduced in stages where necessary for the health of the plant — most species shouldn't be taken back more than a third of their volume in a single cut. For badly overgrown hedges, the initial cut brings them back significantly, with a follow-up cut the following season completing the reduction. You'll be given an honest assessment of what's achievable in a single visit and what requires a phased approach.
Not in most cases for garden trees on private property, but there are exceptions. Trees subject to Tree Preservation Orders cannot be pruned or removed without Wicklow County Council's consent. Trees in certain conservation areas or on properties with specific planning conditions may also have restrictions. If there's any uncertainty about whether a tree on your property is covered by a TPO or other restriction, John will discuss this before any work starts.
It depends on the length, height, and species of the hedge and the extent of the work needed. John gives free, no-obligation quotes before any work is agreed. There are no standard rates quoted online because every hedge is different — a 20-metre laurel hedge that's 4 metres tall is a different job from 20 metres of well-maintained beech hedge at 2 metres. The quote will be specific to your hedge.
Yes. All cuttings, branches, and debris are cleared from the property and removed. Nothing is left on site.
Yes. A post-clean sealant treatment can be applied to concrete interlocking tiles after cleaning to further inhibit biological regrowth and provide a degree of weathering protection. This is discussed as an option when quoting — it's not pushed as a default add-on on every job, because not every tile type benefits from sealing equally.

Hedge Cutting and Tree Work — Important Practical Notes
Concrete interlocking tiles — the most common tile type on Wicklow homes built from the 1960s onward. More porous than slate, more susceptible to moss and algae penetrating the tile surface. Respond well to biocidal softwash treatment followed by low-pressure cleaning.
Ridge tiles and hip tiles — assessed for pointing condition during every roof clean. Failed or cracking mortar around ridge tiles is one of the most common causes of water ingress in Wicklow homes and is often identified for the first time during a roof clean.
Natural slate — common on older Wicklow properties and on higher-specification modern builds. Requires a careful, low-pressure approach. Never cleaned with high pressure. Biocidal softwash is the correct method.
Fibre cement slates — increasingly common on Wicklow homes from the 1990s onward, often used as a more affordable alternative to natural slate. Require specific treatment — high pressure and certain chemical concentrations can cause surface delamination.

Signs Your Hedges or Trees Need Attention
Hedge overhanging the road, footpath, or a neighbour's property. A legal and practical issue — Wicklow County Council can issue notices requiring overhanging branches to be cut back at the landowner's expense. Better to address it proactively.
Hedge significantly taller or wider than intended. Left too long, hedge reduction becomes a more significant job. Annual or biennial trimming is far cheaper and less disruptive than letting a hedge double in size over five years.
Dead branches visible in the tree crown. Dead branches don't fall on a schedule — they fall when they fail, which is often in high winds or heavy snow. Deadwood removal is straightforward and inexpensive compared to the damage a fallen branch can cause.
Tree branches overhanging the roof, gutters, or walls. Branches in contact with the roof cause moss and algae growth on the tiles directly below, continuously deposit debris into gutters, and in high winds can cause physical damage to the roof covering. Crown lifting to clear the roof line is one of the most cost-effective tree maintenance jobs a Wicklow homeowner can do.
Tree visibly leaning more than it used to. A gradual lean that's becoming more pronounced, particularly after a period of wet weather, can indicate root system failure. This warrants assessment before the situation becomes an emergency.
Hedge completely blocking light to windows or the garden. Hedges that have grown significantly beyond their original height substantially reduce light to the property. Reduction to the original intended height is usually straightforward and the hedge recovers with the following growing season's growth.
